Youth-led Organizations invited to apply for the Global Youth Empowerment Fund offering Grants, Financing & Training

The Global Youth Empowerment Fund, organized by JCI (Junior Chamber International) in partnership with Sustainable Development Goals Action Campaign is a grant opportunity for young people to create a positive impact for their communities at grassroots level. This Fund offers grants, financing, and training to youth-led projects and social enterprises with the objective of advancing the Global Goals for Sustainable Development in local communities around the world.

The Fund has the following objectives:

  • Mobilizes young people, ages 18 to 40, to advance the Global Goals for Sustainable Development through targeted community projects that create awareness and ownership of community progress among all citizens.
  • Engages all sectors of society—business, government and civil society— in the Global Goals by supporting youth-led, community-based initiatives worldwide.
  • Demonstrates the power of young people to create sustainable change, using the JCI Active Citizen Framework, on a global scale through advocacy, action, and evaluation.

The Fund intends to provide support to projects of NGOs and other nonprofit private does whose activities contribute to the promotion of sustainable development and youth leadership. Even public bodies with the specific responsibility of youth engagement in advancing the Global Goals for Sustainable Development are eligible to apply for this grant.

The projects requesting funding should be created and led by youth between the ages of 18 to 40 years.They should demonstrate community impact and project planning criteria in line with the JCI Active Citizen Framework, which is a planning mechanism for community-based organizations to identify their community’s greatest needs and align their projects to the global development agenda creating global impact.

Other criteria include:

  • Adhere to the goals of JCI and SDG Action Campaign in developing grassroots projects that advance at least one of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development through the JCI Active Citizen Framework.
  • Include like-minded community partners who agree to support the applicant’s project. Types of partnership can include financial support, in-kind support or marketing, and communications support.
  • Include plans for organization’s own support of the project, including both financial (e.g. fundraising or sponsorship acquisition) and non-financial (e.g. volunteer hours or in-kind sponsorship) support.
  • The applicant organization is expected to supply at least 50% of the value of the requested funding in their own support.
  • Have mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation and follow-up after funding has been dispersed. All funded projects must submit the required project updates and final reports.

Proposed projects should demonstrate innovation, the potential for scaling up and/or replication and should have financial viability.

The deadline to apply for this opportunity is 31 May 2018. The grantees of this Fund will be announced in July 2018 at the 2018 JCI Global Partnership Summit.

To apply for this Fund, you need to submit an online application. The Fund requests potential applicants to first sign up for an online account at this link. Once the account is created and you confirm your email address, you can log in to the Fund’s online account system and submit your application.

  • Eligibility Form
  • Budget

In the Eligibility Form, you need to provide details such as the Organization Information, Contacts, affiliation etc. In the next page of the application, you need to provide details about your proposed project such as the project name, community need, stakeholder engagement, action steps, monitoring and evaluation form, project location and requested funding (not more than $5000 per grant).

You also need to specify which of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development will be addressed by your project. Goals include No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation etc.

Once this form is complete, you can then head towards the Budget section where you upload an MS Excel sheet detailing your budgetary requirements.
